Administrative history

Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1855, and was first occupied in 1855. The Prison was closed in 1991 when the last prisoners were transferred to the new prison at Casuarina.

NB: The collection of photographs for inmates at Fremantle Prison is not complete and many photographs, particularly for the early period of the Gaol, are missing.

Some photographs may also be held in Record Series No. 449 - Police Department Photographs - and published in the Police Gazettes (accessible at the Battye Library of Western Australian History - ref: 360 POL).
