Administrative history
The Western Australian Government Railways [1] was established following the abolition of the Dept of Works & Railways and the creation of the WAGR and the Dept of Works & Buildings. In 1914 the function of tramways was added and the Department's title changed accordingly.

Administrative history
The Midland Railway Company was floated in England on 21 March 1890 taking over previous interests that had begun work on construction of the railway from Midland Junction to Walkaway, the first sod having been turned on 1 March 1886. Construction had ceased by the end of 1887 but re-started after the new company was formed. The completed railway was opened on 24 November 1894. On 1 August 1964 the company's assets were taken over by the Western Australian Government Railways.
