Administrative history

The Mt Margaret Road District was formed on 17 August 1906. The boundaries were altered on 31 May 1912 with the formation of the Kookynie, Menzies and Mt Malcolm Road Districts. The Municipality of Mt Morgans was dissolved in 1913 and added to the Mt Margaret Road District. The Mt Margaret Road District was divided into four wards on 20 June 1913 and into 5 wards on 29 March 1935. In 1914 there was a transfer of land from Kookynie and to Mt Malcolm and in 1925 land was transferred to and from Leonora and Mt Malcolm. The Mt Margaret became the Laverton Road District on 20 January 1950.

The Laverton Road district came into existence following the change of name from Mt Margaret Road District on 20 January 1950. The Road Board became a Shire on 1 July 1961 when all Road Boards became Shire councils.
