Administrative history
By 1839 it was decided that a police force should be established in Western Australia. In April 1840 John Chipper was appointed a constable for the district of Perth.

The Recognizance Book is a register of fines (bail) paid before the officer in charge of the Lock-up of the Perth Police Station. The register records the date, the name of the payee and sum paid, but not the charge.
