AU WA A580 - DEPARTMENT OF WORKS AND RAILWAYS (1879-12-31 - 1890-10-01)

Administrative history

Prior to 1877, public works had been administered by the Colonial Secretary's Office . In that year, a Director of Public Works was appointed, and in the following year he was also given the title of Commissioner of Railways. In 1879 the Director of Public Works became a member of the Executive Council. That year may be taken as the date when the Department attained its independent existence.
