Administrative history

The State Steamships Service was established in May 1912, largely in response to a request for an improved shipping service to north west ports. The name was changed to that of State Shipping Service in 1919. The State Steamships Service was controlled by the Fremantle Harbour Trust from 1913 to 1918.

Administrative history

The State Shipping Service was established following a change in name from the State Steamships Service in 1919. With the passing of the WA Coastal Shipping Commission Act in 1965, a Commission consisting of three persons was established to control intra-state and overseas shipping.

The Coastal Shipping Commission continued to trade as the State Shipping Service until 1979 when the annual report of the Commission refers to the Commission "trading as Stateships" for the first time.

Includes copies of annual reports and related correspondence for the years 1929-1942, bills lading information, financial records 1913-1930, papers relating particularly to the MV Kybra and MV Kangaroo, and dealing with such matters as cargoes, stowage, ports, costings, stevedoring, industrial issues, earnings, victualling etc.
