Administrative history
In 1850, a Board of Directors of convict prisons was set up in England. Fremantle Prison was built as a convict establishment by the British government in the 1850s as a result of the decision taken in 1849 to transport British felons to Western Australia.
The last convict arrived in Western Australia in 1868 and Fremantle Prison was transferred to the colonial government in 1886.
The transfer of the Imperial Convict Establishment and the Imperial Invalid Depot was completed on 30 April 1887.

Nominal register of expirees and those holding conditional pardons who left the colony by ship from Albany between 1863-1894. The register shows name, number, date of departure, name and destination of vessel, ship in which arrived in colony and remarks.
