A Gaols Department appears to be a sub-department of the Colonial Secretary's Office by 1890. In 1947 the Gaols Department was renamed the Prisons Department.

Scope and content
Register of prisoners maintained by the Gaols Department. The first few pages contains lists of prisoners monthly under the name of the prison for 1902. The remainder of the volume lists prisoners at the Northam Gaol (declared a Police Gaol on 23 August 1907) from 1 September 1907 until 31 January 1932. Details in both lists include name, offence, sentence, dates of admission and discharge and nationality of prisoner.
