AU WA A823 - NYANDI TRAINING CENTRE (1970-02-01 - 2004-05-04)

Administrative history

Nyandi Training Centre was established in February 1970. Situated in Bentley, it was a maximum security training centre with supportive hostel accommodation for the long-term treatment of teenage girls whose behavioural problems could not be effectively treated in more open situations.

Nyandi also provided care for girls who were at risk in the community and who had been made wards of the Department through application to the Children's Court.

There was accommodation for 20 girls plus a supportive hostel, Gwyn-lea, where a further 16 girls could live and go regularly to school or work until able to live in the community.

Nyandi became co-correctional, taking in juvenile males, in 1987.

Nyandi operated under the auspices of the Child Welfare Department (1970-1972), the Department for Community Welfare (1973-1984), the Department for Community Services (1984-1992) and the Department for Community Development (1992). In 1993 all Juvenile Justice matters were taken over by the Ministry of Justice.

In the 1990s Nyandi moved to buildings on the same land as Longmore, and was re-built on the demolished Longmore site in the early 2000s. The new complex was opened as Boronia Pre-Release Centre for Women on 5 May 2004.
