Administrative history

Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1855, and was first occupied in 1855. The Prison was closed in 1991 when the last prisoners were transferred to the new prison at Casuarina.

Scope and content

Registers of female prisoners detained in Fremantle Prison. The registers are arranged by prisoner number, and show name, nationality, birthplace, age, physical description, marital status, religion, trade, whether can read and write, personal description (distingishing marks). Particulars of conviction shown: date, place, before whom, offence, sentence, remarks.

Item date range on consignment list is the first date of conviction of first prisoner entered in the volume and the first date of conviction of the last prisoner entered in the volume. Some prisoners were admitted more than once. Date of discharge is shown from volume 2 onwards. Some registrations are accompanied by photographs.

At end of volume 4 entries are continued on cards.

A card index of female prisoners has been compiled by Fremantle Prison Museum (WAS 795).

Female prisoners were transferred to Bandyup Womens Prison in 1970.

NOTE: Access to these registers is restricted for seventy years from the date given in the item date range. This extra period of restriction is to accommodate later entries for prisoners who have re-offended.
