Administrative history

The first Bunbury Lock-Up was built in 1848. The building was reconstructed and strengthened in 1852. The complex was demolished in 1969.

Scope and content

Registers of prisoners at Bunbury Gaol, arranged by prisoner number. The registers record the following details for each prisoner: name, nationality, place of birth, age, physical details, marital status, religion, trade, whether can read and write, personal description (identifying marks - e.g. tattoos, scars, etc.). Particulars of conviction are also recorded: date of conviction, place of conviction, before whom sentenced, offence, sentence, remarks.

Most of the prisoners included in these registers were charged with minor offences with short sentences. Prisoners charges with serious offences were transferred to Fremantle Prison.

NB: Access to these registers is restricted for seventy years from the date given in the item date range. This extra period of restriction is to accommodate later entries for prisoners who have re-offended.
