Administrative history

The Convict Depot in Geraldton was proclaimed a Public Gaol on 27 December 1864 under the Ordinance 12 Vic No. 7 of 1849. In 1964 Geraldton Prison became a "common gaol" i.e. it was administered by prison staff and not by the police. In 1967-68 Geraldton Prison expanded to include the buildings of an adjacent empty hospital and was entitled Geraldton Regional Prison. In 1984-85 prisoners were transferred to Greenough Regional Prison.
