Administrative history
Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1855, and was first occupied in 1855. The Prison was closed in 1991 when the last prisoners were transferred to the new prison at Casuarina.

Registers of receipts and discharges from Fremantle Prison. The registers show date, name and registration number of prisoner, whether on trial, debtor, remand, reform, local, juvenile, Aboriginal, condemned, female, with total number for each category for each day. For those received, the registers state where from, sentence. For discharges, in the remarks column it usually says "to freedom".
