Administrative history

The Rottnest Island Authority was established under the Act of the same name to come into existence on 30 May 1988.

The Act gives the Authority the power to control and manage the Island for the following purposes:

  • to provide and operate recreational and holiday facilities on the Island;

  • to protect the flora and fauna of the Island; and

  • to maintain and protect the natural environment and the man-made resources of the Island and, to the extent that the Authority's resources allow, repair its natural environment.

As part of a series of machinery of government changes effective from 1 July 2017, the Rottnest Island Authority became part of the new Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. This new department brought together the functions and staff of the Department of Parks and Wildlife, Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, Rottnest Island Authority and the Zoological Parks Authority.

Scope and content

This series comprises submissions, petitions and comments sent to the Rottnest Island Board following the public release of a Master Plan for the Island in February 1984 ("Rottnest Island Master Plan, Stage 1 Interim Report" prepared by Parry & Rosenthal, et alia).

Approximately 8000 responses were lodged with the Board prior to the closure date of 21 May 1984. Many responses comprised suggestions that were included in the draft management plan for the Island, released in February 1985. A summary of responses to the Master Plan was produced "Analysis of Submissions received concerning the Rottnest Island Master Plan", Australian Marketing Services, August 1984 (a copy of this analysis is not included in the records held by the State Records Office).

These records were held at the office of the Minister responsible for Rottnest Island. Following the change of State Government in 1993, the records were returned to the Rottnest Island Authority. When the Authority moved to Fremantle from West Perth in late November 1995, these records were transferred to the State Records Office.
