Scope and content

Records of visitors to the prison including inmates' family and friends, etc. Some are arranged alphabetically (by date within each letter) and show date, class, names of prisoner and visitor, by whom conducted and time. Later volumes show whether visit is ordinary or contact. There are sequences, arranged by date, for ordinary and contact visits. Contact visits meant that the inmate and his/her visitors could be in the same room and not separated by a screen or grill. These books show number of visits for each day, location (or division), names of prisoner and visitor, relationship, times of visits and signature of officer. Names of officers on duty are shown. At the back of some volumes are lists of prisoners who were strip searched and of prisoners who received warnings for unacceptable behaviour. There are single volumes for particular units including the Special Handling Unit, the Assessment Centre etc.

One volune, Cons 4424, labelled Bunbury visits records names of inmates of Bunbury Prison who were brought to Fremantle so that relatives could visit them. Sometimes relatives in Bunbury were given transport to visit inmates in Fremantle Prison.

This is an artificial series created by the State Archives to include various records relating to visitors to inmates. For official visitors to the prison see WAS 732.
