Administrative history
The Tourist and Publicity Bureau was the first official state organization to deal specifically with tourist enquiries. Prior to this, tourist related enquiries had been carried out by the State Hotels and Immigration Departments. The Bureau appears to have been commonly referred to as the Tourist Bureau.

Administrative history
The Western Australian Tourist Development Authority was established by the Tourist Act 1959 to assist the development of tourist resorts and the tourist industry in W.A. The Tourist Development Authority was replaced by the Department of Tourism which administered the Tourist Act 1973. This act also repealed the Tourist Act 1959.

The Department of Tourism was created following the passing of the Tourist Act 1973 which also repealed the Tourist Act 1959. The new Department replaced the 14 year old Tourist Development Authority.

Administrative history
The Tourism Commission, trading as Tourism WA, was established under the Tourism Commission Act 1983 which also repealed the Tourist Act of 1973. The Commission is responsible for developing and operating tourist facilities in the State, promoting tourism and travel and providing travel and tourist information. Tourism WA is part of the broader economic development portfolio of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
