Scope and content

The records in this series were created by the Head Office of the Department of Labour, which was established in 1924. The files cover such topics as the creation of the Department, relations with the Commonwealth, the deployment of labour during World War II, annual reports, applications and appeals, and administrative matters arising from the introduction of various awards.

In 1972 the industrial relations function of the Department of Labour was transferred to the Public Service Board (Agency No. 123). The role of the Department of Labour changed to one of regulation, labour relations and monitoring industrial relations in the private sector. The Department was renamed the Department of Labour and Industry.
