Verdict: Not Guilty. May Quigley moved from Norseman to Kalgoorlie ca. August 1897 and was said to be a prostitute. Nellie Benstead, a half-caste, came from Alice Springs ca. 1893 with William Benstead who became a Norseman hotelkeeper. Nellie left William in 1896 and subsequently was alleged to have had a child by an Afghan. The child died within 24 hours of birth.
