He became Minister for Education; Cultural Affairs; Recreation in March 1977 followed by appointment as Minister for Resources Development; Mines; Fuel and Energy; Industrial Development in March 1980. He held these portfolios until the Labour government under Brian Burke took office following the State election in February 1983.
