The Hon. Peter Jones MLA was elected to Parliament as a member for Narrogin in March 1974 and became Deputy Leader of the Country Party in May 1975.

The Hon. Peter Jones MLA was appointed as Minister for Housing; Conservation and Environment; Fisheries and Wildlife in June 1975 in the Sir Charles Court Ministry. He became Minister for Education; Cultural Affairs; Recreation in March 1977 followed by appointment as Minister for Resources Development; Mines; Fuel and Energy; Industrial Development in March 1980. He held these portfolios until the Labour government under Brian Burke took office following the State election in February 1983.

The papers were donated to the private archives collection by Peter Jones on 10 May 2002 (Acc. 6230A) and 10 January 2005 (Acc. 6409A). Those records relating to his Ministerial portfolios were transferred from the private archives collection to SRO on 17 October 2005.
