Administrative history

The Public Works Department changed its name to the Building Management Authority on 1 January 1985.

Name of creator

AU WA A587 - DEPARTMENT OF WORKS AND BUILDINGS (1890-10-01 - 1900-12-31)

Administrative history

About the same time that the State received independent status, the functions of railways and public works were split into two separate departments, the Western Australian Government Railways [1] and the Department of Works & Buildings. The latter became the Public Works Department in 1901.

Name of creator

AU WA A580 - DEPARTMENT OF WORKS AND RAILWAYS (1879-12-31 - 1890-10-01)

Administrative history

Prior to 1877, public works had been administered by the Colonial Secretary's Office . In that year, a Director of Public Works was appointed, and in the following year he was also given the title of Commissioner of Railways. In 1879 the Director of Public Works became a member of the Executive Council. That year may be taken as the date when the Department attained its independent existence. In 1890 the Department was separated into two departments, the Department of Works & Buildings and the Western Australian Government Railways, the former becoming the Public Works Department.

Scope and content

Public Works Department field and level books detailing surveys of the following activities:

Railways construction (to 1930), Metropolitan water supply, sewerage and drainage (to 1910), country water supply, Goldfields water supply, country town sewerage and drainage schemes, Irrigation schemes, surveys of harbours and rivers.

No metropolitan water and sewerage books were registered with this series after 1910. The books dealing with these activities were transferred to the Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Department in the 1920's (see Record Series No. 84).

Following the transfer of the Public Works Department's Railway Construction Branch to the WA Government Railways in 1930, most of the Branch's field books were removed from the Public Works Department. Some books covering early railway surveys were not transferred and remain with the series.

From 1930 the field books almost exclusively record surveys of country water supply and irrigation schemes (including dam construction) and the provisions of sewerage and drainage services to country towns.
