Administrative history

The Bureau of Consumer Affairs was established under the Consumer Affairs Act 1971. It operated as a branch of the Department of Labour and Industry until 1983, when it was combined with other agencies involved in consumer services to form the Department of Consumer Affairs. It was formerly known as the Consumer Protection Bureau. In 1981 the Consumer Affairs Council, for which the Bureau acted as secretariat, was abolished and its functions were transferred to the Bureau.

Administrative history

The Department of Consumer Affairs was established in 1983 when the then Bureau of Consumer Affairs was joined with a number of branches from other Departments which provided consumer services or occupational licensing. In January 1988 the Department became the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

Administrative history

In January 1988 the Department of Consumer Affairs became the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. The Ministry's corporate mission was to promote and maintain fair trading within the market place. It administered a number of Acts relating to consumer affairs.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs was superseded by the Ministry of Fair Trading on 1 January 1993.

Administrative history

The Bureau, within the Department of Labour, was set up as the secretariat for the Consumer Affairs Council in 1971. The Bureau received and dealt with complaints from consumers. In 1975 the Bureau's name was changed to Consumer Affairs Bureau. In 1981 the Consumer Affairs Council was abolished and its functions were transferred to the Consumer Affairs Bureau.
