Administrative history

The Colonial Secretary's Office was retitled the Chief Secretary's Department on 16 April 1924. The Chief Secretary's Department was responsible for a number of varied functions including Harbour and Lights, Gaols, Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Astronomical Services and Racing.

By 1980, the Department's responsibilities were limited to Prisons, Astronomical Services, Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages and the Correspondence Despatch Office.

The Department was abolished in 1983.

The Liquor Act of 1970 repealed the existing legislation to establish the Licensing Court of Western Australia.

In February 1984 the Office of Racing & Gaming assumed administrative responsibilty for the Court.

Administrative history

The Liquor Licensing Court comprises a Judge who is required under the Act to hear and determine contested applications for the grant or removal of Category A licenses (i.e. hotels, taverns, caberets and liquor stores). All other applications are heard by the Director of Liquor Licensing (Office of Racing Gaming & Liquor).

The Court's determinations have the same weight as those handed down by the District Court.

Scope and content

This files series comprises the main set of files from the Liquor Licensing Court and deals with a range of liquor licensing matters.

The Liquor Licensing Court operated as a branch of the Chief Secretary's Department until 1970 when, under the terms of the Liquor Act of 1970, the Court was established as a statutory authority empowered to grant licences on a state wide basis with exclusive jurisdiction to hear and determine all applications regarding licensing and to set the conditions for the granting of licences and permits.
